Optics 2025 was released on January 31, 2025. Customers who are subscribed to the Optics Upgrade & Support Plan as of January 31, 2025 , and who have a valid one-year license, can use Optics 2025 with the latest installer and their current license.
Product overview
Optics is a collection of filters that simulate optical camera filters, specialty lenses, film stocks, lens flares, optical lab processes, grain, color correction, natural light and photo effects.
It can be used as a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom or as a standalone software.
Optics features a unique interface and includes 174 filters and over 1,000 customizable presets. The included filters also include 85 carefully selected effects from Sapphire , the premier VFX plug-in from Boris FX . Sapphire's high-quality lens flares and glow effects, long a favorite among filmmakers, can now be used in Photoshop and Lightroom.
The interface features powerful masking tools and layers, allowing you to creatively apply filters and edit images.
The built-in particle generator software from Boris FX, Particle Illusion, allows you to create high-quality particle effects such as smoke, fire, explosions, fluids, and particles, and you can also use particle trails, gradient presets, 3D deflectors, and force sterbulence to expand the range of expression.
The latest version, 2025, is equipped with an AI masking function that uses machine learning, allowing you to accurately isolate objects with one click. It also includes new features such as a particle brush that allows you to intuitively add dynamic particle effects by hand, and a look stub function that allows you to custom save and instantly apply multi-layer filter and mask settings.

Harness the power of machine learning to make precise masking easy. Mask ML automatically recognizes objects and lets you instantly crop, correct, and adjust specific areas with one click. Plus, it seamlessly adds adjacent areas with a simple click, ensuring a perfect mask every time.
Drawing with particles
Particle Brushes let you paint dynamic effects directly onto your images. Animate particles or generate them as you paint, for endless possibilities. Plus, preset categories like Brushes - Animate Particles and Brushes - Emit Particles give you instant inspiration and a starting point for your creations.
Looks: Instantly apply multi-layer presets
Looks save you time and streamline your workflow. Create custom multi-layer filter and mask setups and instantly access them in the new Looks tab in the Filters window. Export and share your Looks for consistent results across your projects. Or load pre-made Looks for quick and engaging edits.
Enhanced camera support
Support for the latest digital cameras and RAW file formats has been further expanded. The EXIF library now supports a wide range of the latest digital cameras, and the RAW camera library has been updated to handle RAW files from the latest devices more smoothly. This makes the workflow from shooting to editing even more convenient.

Additionally, you can create and export cinemagraphs (photo animations) using Photoshop, Lightroom, or the standalone Optics application.
